Sorbus aucuparia, commonly called rowan and mountain-ash, is a species of deciduous tree that is native to most of Europe and parts of Asia, as well as northern Africa.
Mountain Ash blossoms from May to June, small yellowish white flowers, and develops small red pomes as fruit that ripen from August to October and are eaten by many bird species. The plant is undemanding and frost hardy. It is a small tree or shrub that grows up to between about 5 and 15 metres (16 and 49 feet) in height.
Its berries are round pomes between 8 and 10 mm (5/16 and 3/8 in) in diameter that ripen from August to October. The fruit are green before they ripen and then typically turn to orange or scarlet in color.

Location: Sun or part sun
Hardiness zones: 2-7
Seeds per packet: 10
Soak the seeds for 12-24 hours before planting. Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. First keep them at room temperature for 30 days. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. Then cover them with plastic to retain moisture, and then place in a fridge for 120 days. Be sure to complete the full 120 day cold period or it will not be effective. Then bring them to approximately 21°C, 70°F for 4 weeks. They may be growing at this point, though often they need a second cold period. If they are not growing cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for another 90-120 days. After the second cold stratification period they are then brought back to 21°C, 70°F for them to germinate. This double cold period is not always needed, but sometimes necessary, and is very normal for these seeds. Germination is in 30-90 days after the second warming period. Be sure they stay lightly moist through all steps.
Ornamental use only. These seeds and/or plants may be poisonous.
