This hardy grass is native to parts of Europe and North Africa. Typically grows in sandy, beach areas, forming a network of rhizomes to help anchor the plant. Will start flowering late in the plant's second year. Clump-forming, though each clump can create a number of new shoots each year.

After the stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature for them to germinate. Germination can be 30-60 days after the warming period, though some can take longer.
