THE ANSWER MAY BE SURPRISING!

We all want the best germination for our seeds, so it seems only natural that the more aids we provide, the better they will do!

If your seeds require warm temperatures to germinate, a heat mat can significantly speed up germination times, and improve germination rates! Examples of seeds that germinate best with supplemental heat are Gerbera, Brugmansia, Banana, Datura, Freezia, Zinnia, Hibiscus, Thunbergia (Black Eyed Susan Vine), tropical/annual Begonia, Petunia, Eustoma (Lisianthus), Cactus, Palms, Canna, Eucalyptus, Tomatoes, Peppers, Basil and Melons.

For most hardy perennials, surprisingly, the majority of seeds don't need a heat mat, and do better without one. A heat mat can actually hinder germination for many seeds.

Every type of seeds has unique needs. Be sure to check your seeds pack for your germination temperatures. We also put this information on each product page on our website.

HOW TO USE A HEAT MAT

Heat mats are designed to keep plants warmer than room temperature, and typically maintain a root zone temperature that is 5-11°C (10-20°F ) above the ambient room temperature, aiming for an ideal range of 24-32°C (75-90°F) for most seeds.

Plant seeds according to their specific requirements. Some seeds will need to be surface sown, or may require light to grow. Others are planted under the surface. Check your seeds pack for specific requirements.

Put the seed tray on the heat mat. Most mats are designed for standard 10x20 inch trays. Turn on the mat, and leave it running 24/7 until you see that the seeds have germinated.
Once your seeds have germinated, you can remove them from the heat. The heat is no longer needed, and can cause leggy seedlings if left on too long.

HOW DO I LOVE MY SEEDS BEST?

In addition to planting seeds at the ideal depth (surface sow or buried) and temperature, we think the best love we can give our plants is in creating the right soil and moisture environments. Some seeds require light or darkness for germination, so surface sowing is needed in some cases.

Sterile soil mixes are ideal for starting most seeds. Maintaining an ideal moisture level is a fun challenge, not too wet, while still never drying out during this crucial time. That's where we find our challenge!

We hope you enjoy your planting, and have a wonderful growing season!
