Description

A stunning blue poppy! Meconopsis horridula, the prickly blue poppy, is an endangered species. The height of the plant varies from 20 cm to 1m. The flowers are large 5-7.5 cm in size. The overlapping petals are arranged in a broad cup shape.

Meconopsis horridula grows in rocky areas and grass slopes at altitudes from 3100 to almost 6000m, close to the limit for vegetation at these altitudes. These plants can be grown in slightly shaded or sunny, cool areas, in meadows and rocky regions. They can also grow with other shrubs such as the rhododendron. They require plenty of moisture while growing and do not need protection from winter. Since they grow on high altitudes, they can tolerate temperatures as low as -10 degrees F. The flower color is not affected by the alkalinity of the soil.

Meconopsis horridula is used for ornamental and horticultural purposes. The seeds germinate when sown in mild heat conditions or a warm bright spot under the sun. Germination of seeds is slow but reliable when sown in a cool place during spring. Plants like well-drained neutral soil. The young seedling has heart-shaped leaves.

Available for a very limited time.

Type: Hardy Perennial

Hardiness zones: 5-8

Height: 50cm, 20"

Availability: If these seeds are showing out of stock, we strongly recommend joining our wait list, as these seeds have a very shorty viability window, and this helps ensure you get the freshest seeds possible! If they are available, they will only be available for a short time.

Note: Ornamental use only. These seeds and/or plants are poisonous.

Germination: It is very important to start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. These seeds require light to germinate. Sow the seeds on the surface of a sterile seed-start mix, and water in. Keep them at 20C for germination. Do not us a heat mat or they will not grow. The seeds generally germinate in 4-6 weeks, though some can take longer so be sure to keep moist. Once germination occurs, place them in a cooler location for them to grow larger, about 15C is ideal.
