Cosmos atrosanguineus, the chocolate cosmos, is a species of Cosmos that produces dark red to black or brownish red flowers which have a scent resembling chocolate, which is one reason for its popularity as a cultivated plant.The plants are often grown from seeds, and the plants form a tuberous root.
It requires partial sun or full sun, and flowers from mid to late summer. In colder areas the tuber can be dug up and stored in a frost-free area over the winter.
Although cosmos smells like chocolate, it should not be eaten.

Starting these seeds indoors in late winter, spring, or early summer. Place the seeds just under the surface of the soil and water in. Keep continuously moist. Place in a dark location, as darkness is required for germination. Be sure to check regularly for germination and then bring to a sunny location. Temperature 20-22C, 68-72F. Seeds germinate 7-25 days. If seeds are received in fall, store in the refrigerator until the soonest chance that they are able to be planted.
