Description

Helenium autumnale is a North American native species. Common sneezeweed is a perennial herb up to 130 cm (51+1⁄3 in; 4+1⁄3 ft) tall. In late summer and fall, one plant can produce as many as 100 yellow flower heads in a branching array.

The wild form of this plant is widespread across much of the United States and Canada, from Northwest Territories as far south as far northern California, Arizona, Louisiana, and Florida. It grows in moist, open areas along streams and ponds as well as wet meadows.

The flowers attract various pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and wasps. Because the plant is pollinated by insects, not wind pollinated, it does not cause seasonal allergies or sneezing, despite its common name.

Common sneezeweed is cultivated as a garden perennial.

Type: Hardy perennial

Hardiness zones: 3-9

Location: Sun

Seeds per pack: 50

Germination: Your planting container should have holes in the bottom for excess water to drain. Sow the seeds just under the surface of a seed-start mix and water in. Keep lightly moist and do not let the soil dry out. Keep at 20-22 °C, 68-72 °F. Seeds germinate within 10-30 days. Start these seeds indoors right away for best germination rates.
