Tradescantia occidentalis, the prairie spiderwort or western spiderwort, is common and widespread across the western Great Plains of the United States, as well as in Arizona, New Mexico, southern Utah, and Sonora, but is listed as a threatened species in Canada.
Western Spiderwort has plentiful and large vivid-blue flowers, it's blue-green Daylily-like foliage, and it's easy to grow. Two foot tall plants are extremely drought resistant, and tolerant of poor soils. Makes a beautiful addition to a drought resistant garden, or in areas that receive extreme heat. This plant is native to savannas and drier prairies, yet is hardy enough to withstand freezing winters to zone 4!

Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 90 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification they are then brought back to room temperature 20-22C (68-72F) for them to germinate. Germination is irregular over a long period of time, generally 60-90 days, but some can take longer. Do not discard the planting tray, as patience is needed, and they are well worth the wait.
Ornamental use only. These seeds and or plants are poisonous.
