Description

Musa sikkimensis, also called Darjeeling banana, is a species of the genus Musa. It is one of the highest altitude banana species. The plant is robust and about 4 m tall. Flowering and fruiting takes place from October to April.

An invaluable ornamental plant. Though this plant is tropical, we use it liberally in planters around our home in the summer, as the foliage is unbeatable, and provides a lush, tropical look to the gardens. Plant bold red annuals below the Banana, for a colorful display. Plants can be started from seed each season, though we prefer to bring the plants in and place them in a sunny window for the winter. Leaves can be cut back to reduce the size of the plant in winter, as the plants quickly regrow next season.

Type: Tropical, patio or houseplant

Height: Up to 4 meters in tropical locations, or use as an ornamental patio or houseplant

Seed size: Large

Seeds per pack: 5

Germination: It is important to soak seeds in water water for 24-48 hours before planting. Use rain water or bottled water, as municipal water may harm the seeds. Your planting container should have holes in the bottom for excess water to drain. Place seeds just below the surface of the soil, and place at 25-27C (77-81F). Keep consistently moist until germination. Germination generally takes 4-8 weeks, though be patient, as germination is erratic and some seeds may take longer (some may continue to germinate for 3-12 months). You can cover the container with clear plastic if you wish, to retain moisture until germination. Once seeds emerge, place the pot in a sunny location.
