Large 10-20cm (4-8") early-blooming flowers that emerge dramatically on a bare tree in early spring, with the deciduous leaves expanding shortly thereafter, lasting through summer until autumn. This multi-stemmed large shrub is notable for its ease of cultivation. It is one of the most commonly used magnolias in horticulture, being widely planted in the British Isles, the United States and Canada! It is relatively tolerant to wind and alkaline soils (two vulnerabilities of many other magnolias).

Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 90 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification they are then brought back to room temperature 20-22C (68-72F) for them to germinate. Germination is irregular over a long period of time, generally 60-90 days, but some can take longer. Do not discard the planting tray, as patience is needed, and they are well worth the wait.
Ornamental use only. May be poisonous.
