LIVE SEEDLINGS PITCHER PLANT Sarracenia mix
For the first time, we are offering seedlings of Sarracenia Pitcher Plants!
The Pitchers are currently approximately 2-3" long, (loonie in the picture for scale). These plants are a year and a half old at this point. Starting to catch their own prey, though only fungus gnat/fruit fly size for now. It is a mix of varieties, though primarily leucophylla varieties. We will be sending these out as packages of 5 seedlings, bare root, wrapped in paper towel.
One nice thing about Sarracenia plants, when they're transplanted, they seem to put on a growth spurt. We've noticed this with out own transplanted Sarracenia when moving them to individual pots and would expect anyone who gets these to see something similar within a couple weeks of receiving them and planting them.
Care
Planting
Sarracenia is a relatively easy to care for plant. The soil mix we use is a 50/50 peat/perlite mix. They've been doing very well in this mix. We would recommend keeping the soil mix wet and have been keeping the containers sitting in water all the time. Once the plants start to get larger, they should be moved to deeper containers, ideally 8" tall or taller.
Sunlight
Sarracenia do very well in full sun conditions, these are greenhouse grown though, so they will need to be adjusted to full unfiltered sun. We would recommend starting it off outside in part sun conditions, if they get sun during the morning and are shaded from the afternoon sun, that would be a great way to get them adjusted to your growing area. Once the plants have gotten some larger pitchers, they can be moved to a sunnier location. They will become more colourful and striking the more sun they get once adjusted properly.
Dormancy
Sarracenia do well with dormant periods, we recommend a three month dormant period each year. Try to keep the temperature between 0 and 10 degrees Celsius during this time. We overwintered our Sarracenia in an unheated garage. This supplied shelter from the very cold nights, but never got too warm that they started growing again. During this period, make sure they don't entirely dry out, as that can kill the plant.
Water
All carnivorous plants are picky with water requirements. We've been using rain water for our own plants, though distilled water is a great alternative. If neither of those options is readily available, reverse osmosis water is another option. We recommend avoiding tap water as there are often too many mineral in most water sources for these plants. Ideally, if using a TDS meter, you will see a reading of 50PPM or lower.
