A popular treat for cats! The names catnip and catmint are derived from the intense attraction about two-thirds of cats have toward the plant. It is also grown for its attractant qualities to butterflies. The iridoid that is deposited on cats who have rubbed themselves against the plants leaves repels mosquitoes.
It is a perennial plant that blooms from late spring to autumn. The flowers are fragrant and are either pink in colour or white with fine spots of pale purple. Nepeta cataria is cultivated as an ornamental plant for use in gardens. The plant is drought-tolerant and deer-resistant. It can be a repellent for certain insects, including aphids and squash bugs. Catnip is best grown in full sunlight and grows as a loosely branching, low perennial.

Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Temperature 20-22 °C (68-72 °F) for 4 weeks. They may be growing at this point. If they have not germinated after 4 weeks then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 4 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature for them to germinate. Germination can be 30-60 days after the warming period, though some can take longer.
