Description

Black Lace Sambucus is popular for it's dark serrrated foliage, attractive pink flowers, and it's dark berries in the fall! Elderberry 'Black Lace' is a hybrid plant, which mean that it's seedlings will be diverse. Most will have very narrow foliage, and some will be slightly wider. Most plants will have dark black/red leaves, and others lighter versions. Some seedlings will begin with green/red leaves that mature to a darker red. Overall, this mixture will produce a variety of mainly-dark Elderberry plants for your yard.

Type: Shrub

Height: 1-3 meters. Plants can be pruned to remain as a small shrub, or left to grow to a very small tree.

Location: Sun or part shade

Hardiness zones: 4-9

Seeds per pack: 5

Note: Ornamental use only. These seeds and/or plants are poisonous.

Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. Sow the seeds just under the surface of a sterile seed-start mix, and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 5-6 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature for them to germinate. Germination is in 14-60 days after the warming period. If possible, the best location for sowing in March, April and May, is in cold frame or a cold greenhouse where they will receive the cold period and fluctuating temperatures naturally.
