Alisma plantago-aquatica, also known as European water-plantain, common water-plantain or mad-dog weed, is a perennial flowering aquatic plant widespread across most of Europe and Asia, and apparently spread elsewhere in both the Old and New World.
Alisma plantago-aquatica is a plant that grows in shallow water, and consists of a fibrous root, several long stemmed, and a triangular branched stem bearing numerous small flowers with white or lilac-coloured petals. The flowers open in the afternoon. It flowers from June until August.
Type: Hardy perennial
Hardiness zones: 4-8
Height: 36", 90cm
Location: Sun
Seeds per packet: 50
Your planting container should be waterproof, and not have holes at the bottom. Fill the container with good soil. Sow the seeds just under the surface, and then fill the tray with water to the top of the soil. Leave them at room temperature for 3-4 weeks. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. They will not grow yet. Then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 4-6 weeks. Be sure they stay wet. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to 21°C, 70°F for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-60 days after the warming period, though some can take longer.
Ornamental use only. These seeds and/or plants are poisonous.
