Description

Lobelia cardinalis is native to the Americas, from southeastern Canada south through the eastern and southwestern United States, Mexico and Central America to northern Colombia. Known as Cardinal Flower, the plants are loaded with intense red flowers along tall stems reaching 4' tall! These flowers are a favorite of hummingbirds, and Swallowtail butterflies! Plants are extremely showy, and bloom for many weeks. Plant in a location with moist soil, or wet soil. Plants do not like drought.

Type: Hardy perennial

Height: 48", 4 feet

Location: Sun or part sun

Hardiness zones: 4-9

Seeds per pack: 20

Note: Ornamental use only. These seeds and/or plants are poisonous.

Germination: Start these seeds indoors right away for best germination rates. Your planting container should have holes in the bottom for excess water to drain. These seeds require light to germinate. Sow the seeds on surface of a sterile seed-start mix, and water in. Do not bury the seeds. Leave them at room temperature (20-22 °C, 68-72 °F) for 4 weeks. If they have not germinated after 4 weeks then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 4 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold-moist stratification period they are then brought back to a cool room (15C, 59F) for them to germinate. Germination can be 30-60 days after the warming period, though some will take longer.
