The spring gentian, is one of its smallest members, normally only growing to a height of a few centimeters. Vivid deep blue flowers up to 2 cm in diameter, with a deeply five-lobed corolla; they are produced in late spring to early summer. The flowers attract butterflies and bees (particularly bumblebees) for pollination. Ants are responsible for the spreading of its seeds.

Seeds per packet: 50
Surface sow as light aids germination. Water the seeds in and leave them at room temperature (20C/71F) for 4 weeks. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. They will not grow yet. Then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 6 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to a cool room (15C, 59F) for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-60 days after the warming period, though some can take longer.
