This shooting Star is native to the western United States, specifically in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. An excellent plant for shaded gardens with bright red flowers over several weeks in spring and early summer. The plants perform well when placed under deciduous tree that allow sun in the spring, before the leaves emerge, and then provide shade through the summer heat. Average or moist soil. The tall stems make an excellent cut flower.

Seeds per packet: 25
Surface sow as light aids germination. Water the seeds in. Temperature 20-22°C (68-72°F) for 4 weeks. If they have not germinated after 4 weeks then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 4 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to a cool room (15°C, 59°F) for them to germinate. Germination can be 30-60 days after the warming period, though some will take longer.
