Description

The reddest of all of the oriental poppies! Papaver bracteatum, also known as the Iranian poppy or Persian poppy and the great scarlet poppy, is a sturdy hardy perennial poppy with large deep red flowers up to 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter on stiff stalks up to 4 feet (1.22 metres) high with a prominent black spot near the base of the petals. It is closely related to the commonly cultivated oriental poppy, Papaver orientale and is sometimes recorded as the varietal form Papaver orientale var. bracteatum

These flowers are a deep true-red! These seeds are rare to find, as most of the oriental poppy reds are an orange-red (which we also offer).

Plants live eternally, throughout the years, and do not need to be replanted. This red poppy is hardy as cold as zone 4. Consider planting it with blue or purple lupins, for bold colors, and the plants bloom at the same time in late spring and early summer. Oriental poppies have fern-like foliage.

Type: Perennial, will return each year.

Height: 80 cm, 34"

Location: Full sun

Hardiness zones: 3-8

Note: Ingestion of these seeds or this plant can cause illness.

Seeds per pack: 20

Germination: Some people think poppies are difficult to grow from seed, but there is one basic rule. Poppy seeds are tiny and must be sown on the surface of the soil or compost, then light must be excluded for them to germinate. Scatter seeds on the top of compacted compost and water in well. Cover the pots with a folded newspaper. After two weeks, check daily for signs of germination. At 55°F or above, oriental poppy seeds should germinate in three to four weeks.
