Description

This is a large flowered selection with pink-purple flowers! Betonica macrantha, formerly Stachys macrantha, known as big betony, is a species of flowering plant in the mint family Lamiaceae. It is native to the Caucasus, northeastern Turkey, and northwestern Iran. Grows to 60 cm (24 in) tall by 30 cm (12 in) broad. Spikes of hooded purplish-pink flowers are borne throughout summer. The Latin specific epithet macrantha means "large-flowered". Makes an excellent cut flower.

Type: Hardy perennial

Hardiness zones: 4-7

Height: 45cm, 18"

Location: Sun or part shade

Seeds per pack: 10

Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. These perennial seeds germinate at different times over a long period. Plant your seeds just under the surface of a sterile seed-start mix, water in, and then place at 5°C (41°F) for several weeks. A fridge can be used for this by first covering the container or seeds with plastic to retain moisture. They will not likely germinate in the fridge. After several weeks then bring the container to room temperature for them to germinate. Constant moisture must be maintained. Keep out of direct sun until after germination.
