Description

The Umbrella Plant is an stunning specimen plant that starts off with gorgeous sprays of pink flowers in early spring. Then it produces umbrella-like leaves, similar to a Gunnera but not as large. Umbrella Plant is happy in many soil types, including regular, somewhat dry, and even wet soils at the water's edge.

Type: Hardy perennial

Hardiness zones: 5-9

Height: 60-90cm

Location: Shade or part shade if regular soil. Can be grown in sun in a moist location (by a pond or stream).

Note: Ornamental use only.

Seeds per pack: 10

Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. Sow the seeds just under the surface of a sterile seed-start mix, and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 6-8 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold-moist stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature (20-22 °C, 68-72 °F) for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-90 days after the warming period, though it can vary.
