Passiflora alata, is known as the winged-stem passion flower, ouvaca, red star, fragrant grenadilla, and maracuja de refresco. It is an evergreen vine, growing to 6 m (20 ft) or more.
The fragrant flower is 7-10 cm (3-4 in) wide, with red curved tepals, and a prominent fringed corona in bands of purple and white giving the appearance of stripes. Attracts bees, butterflies and birds!
In temperate zones P. alata is usually cultivated indoors, though it can also be grown outside in areas where the temperature does not fall below 5 C (41 F). It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Soak seeds in water for 12-24 hours before planting. Place seeds just below the soil surface, and instead of using water, use orange juice to moisten the soil. The acidity of the juice will help soften the outer layer of the seeds and aid germination. Place the container is a warm location 25C (77F). A heat mat is beneficial. Germination can occur within 2 weeks to several months. Patience may be needed, though they are well worth the effort! Once seedlings sprout place the pot in a sunny location.
