Aquilegia chrysantha, the golden columbine, is native to much of the United States. The cultivar 'Yellow Queen' is known for its appearance and won the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. While both wild and cultivated A. chrysantha are known for their large flowers, 'Yellow Queen' is recognized for its even larger, massive yellow flowers, it's tendency to produce more flowers than the standard A. chrysantha, and it's long life. The golden-yellow flowers grow on a long stem above the leaves and have long spurs.

The plants are is resistant to droughts and blooms over a long period of time. It requires moist and well-drained soil. It is beneficial of moths, butterflies, and bees. Blooming occurs April to September in the south, and May in June in the Northern hemisphere.
