Description

Large long narrow wispy and drooping plumes are eye-catching! Like a giant Astilbe, Goatsbeard displays soft creamy-white plumes and attractive fern-like foliage! They form amazing large clumps that slowly grow larger each year, becoming more and more impressive! These plants are extremely easy to care for. We have been growing giant Goatsbeard for many years, and have never needed to water it or pamper it, and it is dense enough to crowd out weeds below. Every year, without fail, it produces masses of flowers. Even as they flowers fade, the dried flowers turn a bronze and retain their form, creating a brilliant ornamental well through winter.

Type: Hardy perennial

Hardiness zones: 3-9, possibly zone 2

Height: 3-4 feet

Location: Shade or part shade

Seeds per pack: 15

Germination: Start these seeds right away for best germination rates. Sow the seeds just under the surface of a sterile seed-start mix, and water in. Leave them at room temperature for 4 weeks. They will not grow yet. Then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 5-6 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature for them to germinate. Germination is in 14-60 days after the warming period. If possible, the best location for sowing in March, April and May, is in cold frame or a cold greenhouse where they will receive the cold period and fluctuating temperatures naturally.
