Scarlet leather flower, is a climbing native to the United States. Its natural habitat is on rocky limestone cliffs and stream-sides. This is an herbaceous and slightly woody vine that can climb to nine feet. It produces bell-shaped flowers in the spring and summer. The flower petals are thick and leather-like with scarlet-colored sepals.
This Clematis is a very hardy and drought tolerant and when planted in sunny conditions, flowers may persist until the first frost.

Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 9 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification they are then brought back to room temperature 20-22°C (68-72°F) for them to germinate. Germination is irregular over a long period of time, generally 8-12 weeks, but some can take longer. Do not discard the planting tray, as patience is needed, and they are well worth the wait.
