Germination: Some people think poppies are difficult to grow from seed, but there is one basic rule. Poppy seeds are tiny and must be sown on the surface of the soil or compost, then light must be excluded in order for them to germinate. Scatter seeds on the top of compacted compost and water in well. Cover the pots with a folded newspaper. After two weeks, check daily for signs of germination. At 55°F or above, oriental poppy seeds should germinate in three to four weeks.
