Opuntia phaeacantha is a species of prickly pear cactus known by the common names brown-spine prickly pear, tulip prickly pear, and desert prickly pear, which is found across the United States and Mexico.
The plant forms dense localized thickets. It has a mounding habit of flattened green pads which are protected by clusters of spines.
The flowers are bright yellow with a pale green to orange or red center, and occasionally may produce flowers of other colors such as orange, pink, or magenta.

Obtain a container with holes in the bottom, to allow water to drain. Use a mix of 50:50 soil and sand. Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Leave them at room temperature for 4 weeks. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. They will not grow yet. Then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 6 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are kept at 21°C-70°C for germination.
