Spurless Columbine is native across a range spanning Siberia, Central Asia into the Himalayas, and east to Japan. The species in the eastern Himalayas produce larger lilac flowers. The flowers bloom from May to August. 

The plant prefer cool climates. It is primarily found upon cliffs and in rock fissures. On rare occasions, the species will populate sloping rocky meadows. It prefers limestone soil.

Paraquilegia plants are cultivated by rock gardeners, and is generally appraised as the domain of only "the most experienced growers". Even though it is the most common species of Paraquilegia in cultivation, it is still comparatively rare. As of 2025, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew's Plants of the World Online predicted the extinction risk of P. microphylla as "not threatened" with a confidence level of "confident".
