We are extremely happy to be able to offer these fresh spores, from a large plant grown in Ontario (indoors)! These plants have become increasingly difficult to import into Canada. It is one of the most commonly cultivated tree ferns as an ornamental plant. Easy to grow. It is used in gardens and public landscaping. It is one of the hardier tree ferns (zones 9-11) or can be used on the patio seasonally. Heavy frosts may kill the fronds, but plants recover quickly. The plant prefers protected, shady moist conditions but can be grown in sunny areas. Must be well watered.
The 'seeds' of this fern are actually very tiny spores. Customers have reported excellent results regarding the germination.
Spores per packet: 100-200
Soak a seed-start mix with boiling water to kill parasites. Allow to drain and cool for about an hour. Tap the spores onto the surface of the growing mix. Cover the pots with plastic, or place in a clear plastic bag. Place in a well lit window or under grow lights, but not in direct sunlight. Water from a bottom tray as to not disturb the spores. Temperature 20-22C, 68-72F. The ferns will start to germinate in a few weeks, though could take a few months to form little plants. Patience is required, though they are well worth the wait!
