Description

The Illinois Bundleflower's attractive fern-like foliage is sensitive to external stimulation such as touch or light, which causes the leaflets to fold inward, thus giving the plant the common name false sensitive plant. The white flowers contain five sepals, petals and stamens and are borne in “powder puff”. Desmanthus illinoensis is also known as Illinois bundleflower, prairie-mimosa or prickleweed, is a common plant in many areas of the USA.  This species is used in many native seed mixes. Children of Native American tribes once used the distinctive round seed heads of this plant as rattles.

Type: Hardy perennial

Hardiness zones: 4-9

Height: 18-48", 45-120cm

Location: Sun to part shade

Note: Ornamental use only. These seeds and/or plants are poisonous.

Seeds per pack: 15

Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. The waxy seed coat needs to be scarified prior to planting. Pour 180 degrees F water over the seeds and soak them overnight to soften the seed coat and speed germination. Direct sow 1/4" deep and keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which should occur within 10-20 days. If you receive these seeds in winter then start them indoors. Sow just under the surface of the soil and keep the soil lightly moist and at a temperature of 70 degrees F until germination.
