Description

Vernonia gigantea, also known as giant ironweed, or tall ironweed, is a species of perennial plant found in United States and Canada. The plant is native to the eastern United States, north to New York state and Ontario, and southwest to Texas. The plants are up to 2.1 metres, 7' tall. The flowers open from July to September and are purple in colour. The plants can be found growing in moist soils along roadsides, and are common in meadows and open woodlands. Ironweed are very attractive to many pollinators!

Type: Hardy perennial

Hardiness zones: 5-9

Height: 5', 150cm

Note: Ornamental use only. These seeds and/or plants are poisonous.

Germination: Start these seeds right away for best germination rates. These seeds require a period of cold. Sow the seeds just under the surface of a sterile seed-start mix. Leave them at room temperature for 2 weeks. They will not grow yet. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 5-6 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature for them to germinate. If possible, the best location for sowing in March, April and May, is in cold frame or a cold greenhouse where they will receive the cold period and fluctuating temperatures naturally.
