Cornus capitata is a species of dogwood known by the common names Bentham's cornel, evergreen dogwood, Himalayan flowering dogwood, and Himalayan strawberry-tree. It is native to the low-China, India, and surrounding nations and it is naturalized in parts of Australia and New Zealand. It is grown elsewhere as an ornamental. This is an evergreen tree growing to 12 meters in height and width. The leaves are gray-green and pale and fuzzy underneath, and several centimeters long. It flowers during the summer in white blooms.
Hardiness zones: 8-10, with some references of it being hardy in zone 7.
Location: Sun or part shade
Seeds per packet: 10
Soak the seeds for 12-24 hours before planting. Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 90 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature 20-22C (68-72F) for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-90 days after the warming period, though some can take longer. Do not discard the planting tray, as patience is needed, and they are well worth the wait.
