Antennaria plantaginifolia, known by the common names plantain leaf pussytoes and woman's tobacco, is a perennial native to North America, that produces unique creamy-white colored flowers in spring, that resemble cats paws! Attractive velvety grey-green foliage. An added bonus, these plants are host plants for the American Painted Lady butterfly!
Antennaria plantaginifolia is widely distributed in the eastern North America from Quebec and Nova Scotia west to Minnesota and south to Mississippi, Arkansas, and Florida, with isolated populations in eastern Texas and Saskatchewan. In Virginia, it grows in habitats including dry forests, barrens, and meadows.

Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. These seeds require a period of cold. Sow on the surface of a sterile seed-start mix. Do not bury the seeds as they require light for germination. Water gently, or from a bottom tray. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 5-6 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature for them to germinate. If possible, the best location for sowing in March, April and May, is in cold frame or a cold greenhouse where they will receive the cold period and fluctuating temperatures naturally.
