It is a rosette-forming evergreen perennial growing to 10 cm (4 in) high by 20 cm (8 in) broad, with oval, crinkled leaves. Five-petalled purple flowers with prominent yellow anthers appear on leafless stems in spring. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Type: Hardy perennial

Hardiness zones: 6-10

Location: Shade or part sun

The genus is most closely related to Cape Primrose (Streptocarpus).

Seeds per packet: 10

Note: African violet seeds are extremely small. Do not bury them for germination. See germination information below. The seeds so very extremely tiny, we use reading glasses to pack them in wax envelopes. If you order please be okay with knowing it's the way that legitimate African Violet seeds are. Thank you :-)

Germination: These seeds require light to germinate. Sow the seeds on surface and water in. Do not bury the seeds. Leave them at room temperature (20-22 C, 68-72 F) for 4 weeks. If they have not germinated after 4 weeks then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 4 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold-moist stratification period they are then brought back to a cool room (15C, 59F) for them to germinate. Germination can be 30-60 days after the warming period, though some will take longer.
