Catalpa speciosa, also known as Northern Catalpa, Hardy Catalpa, Northern Cigar Tree, Western Catalpa, and Catawba Tree, is a deciduous tree native to the midwestern United States. With heart-shaped leaves up to 1', this fast-growing tree becomes covered in stunning large white flowers in summer. It is tolerant of heat and drought. The Northern Catalpa also makes for a beautiful ornamental tree, as it grows up to 90 ft tall and wide. Its large trumpet-shaped flowers are accompanied by pod-like fruit up to 15 inches long that stay attached to the tree during winter. 

Type: Hardy tree

Hardiness zones: 4-8

Location: Sun or part shade

Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. Soak seeds for 24 hours before planting. Surface sow the in a sterile seed-start mix, and keep continually moist until plants germinate. Germinate at room temperature (20-22 °C, 68-72 °F).
