Hybrid plant Lobelia Trailing

When wondering what plants to grow, sometimes people ask about hybrids, native plants, and genetically modified (GMO) plants. Here are some easy-to-understand explanations!

Hybrid Plant

A hybrid plant is a plant that is the result of two different plant varieties cross-pollinating. Hybridizing can be natural, and sometimes happens in nature. Hybridizing is sometimes performed with the goal of creating specific traits such as colour, size, or disease resistance. Produced hybrids often have fancy names like Black Eyed Susan 'Spanish Eyes', or Lobelia 'Twilight Lilac'.

Native Plants

Native plants are plants that originated in that particular area. They are adapted to growing in their native environment, and will generally be very hardy and disease resistant there. Our native category features plants that are native to North America. Just remember to check the hardiness zone and water requirements for your location, as this can change, even within the same growing area.

Genetically Modified

A genetically modified organism (GMO) plant is one that has had its DNA modified. This process is also known as genetic engineering. At Ferri Seeds we avoid these types of plants and seeds, and to our knowledge nothing we carry is GMO.
