The Prunus mexicana, commonly known as the Mexican Plum, is a species of plum tree that can be found in the Midwestern and Southeastern United States, as well as Northern Mexico. It has a single trunk and reaches a height of 15-38 feet. The tree is characterized by its fragrant, showy, white flowers that bloom before the leaves appear. The plums of Prunus mexicana turn from yellow to mauve to purple as they ripen from July through September. The fruit is enjoyed fresh and can be made into preserves. It is also consumed by birds and mammals. Prunus mexicana is very similar to Prunus americana and they intergrade around Arkansas and Missouri. Mexican Plum is adaptable to a wide range of soil pH and is drought-tolerant. A beautiful and versatile tree that adds beauty and fruit production to the landscape.

The seeds are in very limited supply.

Type: Hardy tree

Location: Sun or part sun

Hardiness zones: 7-9

Seeds per packet: 3

Note: The seeds and leaves of prunus contain poisons. Do not eat them.

Germination: Soak the seeds for 12-24 hours before planting. Sow the seeds just under the surface and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 60-90 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold-moist stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature (20-22 C, 68-72 F) for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-90 days after the warming period, though some can take longer. Do not discard the planting tray, as patience is needed, and they are well worth the wait.
