Description

Carlina acaulis (stemless carline thistle, dwarf carline thistle, silver thistle) is a perennial flowering plant native to alpine regions of central and southern Europe. It is often used as a rockery plant, or dried and hung as a house decoration.

The flowers are produced in a large (up to 10 cm) flowerhead of silvery-white ray florets around a central disc. The plants look rather impressive in clumps. The flowering time is between August and September.

It prefers dry soils.

In Basque culture it was traditionally used as symbol of good fortune, fixed into the frontal door of the house and was given by the goddess Mari.

Type: Hardy perennial

Hardiness zones: 3-10

Location: Sun

Seeds per pack: 10

Germination: Obtain a planting container that has holes in the bottom for excess water to drain. Use regular soil, nothing amended with fertilizers or manure of any kind. A seed-start mix is ideal when mixed with 1/4 sand. Soak seeds for 24 hours before planting. Place the seeds on the surface of the soil and water lightly. Keep lightly most until germination, but do not over water. Generally germinates within 8 weeks. Stratification improves germination, though germination can be attempted without it. If no growth within 8 weeks, place the pot in a cold area for 60 days, and then return them to room temperature for germination within 8 weeks after being brought to warmth.
