Drosera tokaiensis is a natural hybrid between Drosera spatulata and Drosera rotundifolia. The species was previously thought to be a subspecies or variety of Drosera spatulata. It is often mistaken for D. spatulata in cultivation.

Drosera tokaiensis is unlike D. rotundifolia in that it does NOT need dormancy, but it can go dormant if subjected to low temperatures. It ideally prefers warm tropical conditions. It is ideal for the beginner sundew grower. Drosera tokaiensis is exceptionally fast growing and can flower at only 4 months old. It is easy to grow from seed. Under bright light it will develop a beautiful red coloration.

Drosera tokaiensis is a rosetted sundew, remaining about 1.25 inches across at maturity. Grows well in a large temperature range of 45-90 degrees F. Ideally give Drosera tokaiensis subtropical conditions. In nature, this plant can tolerate temps up to 100 degrees during the summer months.

Dormancy is not required. If subjected to cold temperatures in the mid 30 degrees F for extended periods of time, this plant may form a hibernacula. Very hard to kill once established and should come back from the roots if it suddenly freezes, or if the media dries out completely.

Drosera tokaiensis is one of the best self-pollinating sundews. It tends to form clumps over time. Drosera tokaiensis has no trouble dealing with repotting and root disturbance, so divisions can be taken easily.
