Butomus umbellatus is known by common names flowering rush or grass rush. The plant is a rhizomatous perennial aquatic plant, and is used in bog areas and ponds as a very attractive ornamental plant.

It has very attractive pink flowers and upright pointed leaves 1 metre long, or more. Butomus umbellatus is native to Eurasia and was first found in Canada in the late 1800s and in the United States in the early 1900s. This plant spreads mostly from its rhizomes and occurs in wet areas with muddy soil, such as freshwater marshlands, lakes and streams.

This plant should only be grown in contained garden ponds, and not in areas near natural watercourses and wetlands to prevent unwanted spread.

In contrast to what its English name suggests, it is not a true rush. It is native to Old World continents and grows on the margins of still and slowly moving water down to a depth of about 3 m.

Type: Hardy perennial, water plant or bog plant

Hardiness zone: 4-6

Height: 40", 100cm

Location: Sun

Seeds per packet: 100
