Description

Asimina triloba, the American papaw, pawpaw, or paw paw, is a small deciduous tree native to the eastern United States and Canada, producing a large, yellowish-green to brown fruit.
Pawpaw fruits are the largest edible fruit indigenous to the United States! Pawpaw fruits have a sweet, custard-like flavor somewhat similar to banana, mango, and pineapple, and are commonly eaten raw, but are also used to make ice cream and baked desserts.

A. triloba is a large shrub or small tree growing to a height of 35 ft (11 m), rarely as tall as 45 ft (14 m).

Type: Hardy tree

Hardiness zones: 5-9

Location: Sun or part shade

Germination: The seeds need to be stratified by planting, and then cold storage for 60-90 days at 35–45 °F (2–7 °C). Once the cold period is completed, place the container at room temperature for them to germinate. Be sure to keep the soil moist during this entire germination period. They are very reliable germinators. They will first form a root underground, and then above ground growth will appear a few weeks later.
