Cedrus deodara, the deodar cedar, Himalayan cedar, or deodar, is an evergreen coniferous tree with level branches, and drooping branchlets, making it ideal for bonsai! The leaves are needle-like.
The botanical name, which is also the English common name, derives from the Sanskrit term and means "wood of the gods". The species natively occurs in Afghanistan, Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, and India (Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu-Kashmir). The deodar is the national tree of Pakistan. Among Hindus, as the etymology of deodar suggests, it is worshiped as a di tree.
It is widely grown as an ornamental tree, often planted in parks and large gardens for its drooping foliage. It can succeed in rather cool-summer climates, as in Stateline, Nevada, and Ushuaia, Argentina.
These plants are sometimes used for bonsai, though they can be grown as a regular full-sized tree. Seeds per packet: 10
Germination: Soak the seeds in water for 30 days before planting. The planting container should have holes in the bottom for excess water to drain. Sow the seeds just under the surface and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 4 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold-moist stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature (20-22 C, 68-72 F) for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-60 days after the warming period.
