A new spin on an old favorite! Try this new red flowering selection. This variety also grows quickly to form a robust clump of deep greenish-red foliage topped with arching red flowers in late spring. The flower stems on this variety are deep red and the large, puffy heart-shaped flowers are bright red with a white tip.  They dangle romantically from the leafless stems over a period of many weeks.

Bleeding heart are a very easy and beautiful hardy perennials for the mainly-shaded garden, and do well even in dry areas under trees, and around homes, and they even grow under the acid-producing evergreen trees! Obviously they are also quite happy in rich, moist soil also. Great plants for spring color!

These seeds are very rare and in very limited supply.

Type: Hardy perennial

Height: 24-36"

Location: Part shade or full shade

Hardiness zones: 3-9, sometimes zone 2

Seeds per pack: 5

Germination: Sow the seeds just under the surface and water in. Leave them at room temperature for 4 weeks. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. They will not grow yet. Then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 80 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold-moist stratification period they are then brought back to a cool room (15-18C, 59-68F) for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-60 days after the warming period, though some can take longer. Be sure to keep them indoors and cool while they are germinating and small plants, as they dislike heat and will not grow in heat at these early stages.
