Korean fir is a very popular ornamental plant in gardens in cool climates, grown for its foliage but also for the abundant cone production even on young trees only 1-2 m tall.
It is a small to medium-sized evergreen coniferous tree growing to 10-18 m tall with a trunk diameter of up to 0.7 m, smaller and sometimes shrubby at tree line. The bark is smooth with resin blisters and grey-brown in colour. The leaves are needle-like, flattened, 1-2 cm long. The cones are 4-7 cm long and 1.5-2 cm broad, dark purple-blue before maturity.
Korean fir is native to the higher mountains of South Korea, including Jeju-do island. It grows at altitudes of 1,000-1,900 m in temperate rain forest with high rainfall and cool, humid summers, and heavy winter snowfall.
Hardiness zones: 5-7
Seeds per packet: 10
Soak the seeds in water for 12 hours planting. Surface sow and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 4 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification they are then brought back to room temperature 20-22 C (68-72 F) for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-60 days after the warming period.
