Also called Bradbury's Bee Balm, this USA native Monarda is shorter and more compact than the popular classic prairie plant Monarda fistulosa, or Wild Bergamot.
Monarda bradburiana grows to a height of 1 to 2 ft (30 to 60 cm). The pink flowers usually bloom in late spring and early summer.
Monarda bradburiana is native to central and southeastern United States where it is found in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Its typical habitat is thickets, woodland edges, grassland and roadsides.
Bee Balm are an ideal food for pollinators, and especially humming birds! Each flower is comprised of multiple long tubular flowers that easily hold nectar. Bee Balm plants are easy to grow, and are not fussy.

Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. These seeds require a period of cold. Sow the seeds just under the surface of a sterile seed-start mix, and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 5-6 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature for them to germinate. If possible, the best location for sowing in March, April and May, is in cold frame or a cold greenhouse where they will receive the cold period and fluctuating temperatures naturally.
