Prunus pumila, commonly called sand cherry, is a North American species of cherry that is widespread in eastern and central Canada from New Brunswick west to Saskatchewan and the northern United States.
Prunus pumila is a deciduous shrub that grows to 0.61-1.83 metres (2-6 feet) tall. It forms dense clonal colonies by sprouts from the root system. The flowers are 15-25 millimetres (9/16-1 in) in diameter with five white petals. The edible fruit is a small cherry 13-15 mm (1/2-9/16 in) in diameter, ripening to dark purple in early summer. They are perfect for snacking or adding to your favorite recipes. Hardy to zone 2 and self-fertile, this plant prefers well-drained or sandy soil and can tolerate drought and strong winds.
The seeds are in very limited supply.
Hardiness zones: 3-8
Seeds per packet: 5
Soak the seeds for 12 hours before planting. Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. First keep them at room temperature for 4 months. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. Then cover them with plastic to retain moisture, and then place in a fridge for 4 months. Be sure they stay lightly moist. Then bring them to approximately 21C, 70F for germination.
The seeds and leaves of prunus contain poisons. Do not eat them.
