0Maianthemum stellatum is also known as star-flowered, starry, or little false Solomon's seal, star-flowered lily-of-the-valley or starry false lily of the valley (syn. Smilacina stellata). It is a species of flowering plant, native across North America. Native across North America generally from Alaska to California to North Carolina to Newfoundland, plus northern Mexico. It has been found in every Canadian province and territory except Nunavut, and from every US state except Hawaii and the states of the Southeast.
It produces delicate starry flowers, then green-and-black striped berries, and finally deep red berries in the fall. Maianthemum stellatum is a herbaceous perennial plant. It grows from extensively branching rhizomes, often forming dense patches.
Type: Hardy perennial
Hardiness zones: 3-8
Location: Shade
Height: 24-36", 60-90cm
Seeds per packet: 10
Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Leave them at room temperature for 4 weeks. This helps break the phytohormones which inhibit germination. They will not grow yet. Then a cooling period is required. Cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 6 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to a cool room (15-18°C, 59-68°F) for them to germinate. Germination can be erratic, generally 30-90 days after the warming period, though some can take longer.
Ornamental use only. These seeds and/or plants are poisonous.
