American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is native to Canada and USA. It prefers full shade environments in deciduous hardwood forests.
The conservation status of American ginseng is globally vulnerable. In Canada, the species is endangered and facing imminent extinction.
Panax quinquefolius is a herbaceous perennial plant. Its aromatic root resembles a small parsnip that forks as it matures. The plant grows 6 to 18 in (15 to 46 cm) tall, usually bearing three compound leaves (sometimes called "prongs"), each with three to five leaflets, 2 to 5 in (5 to 13 cm) long.

If received in fall they can be planted outdoors (be sure to mark the location).
If they are received in winter, plant them in a small pot, water, and placed in the fridge for 3 months. Keep lightly moist. Then remove them in spring for germination. They may germinate in the fridge.
If they are received in March or later, then we have already given them their cold-moist stratification period, and they can be planted just under the surface, water, and they will grow in 1-3 months.
