These plants will attract attention to any garden whether planted as an accent or in a mass planting. They have large colorful flowers and tropical appearing foliage. Their striking brightly colored flowers make them an excellent choice for a border grouping, and their tropical feel works well in pool-side gardens.
Garden Canna prefers sunlight to light shade and soils with high organic matter. They grow best in moist, well-drained soils, but can tolerate some standing water or drought once they are established. They have a high heat tolerance.
In warm climates, the rhizomes may be left in the ground over the winter. In areas with freezing temperatures the rhizomes should be lifted from the ground for winter storage. They should be stored in peat or vermiculite in a cool dry space.
These seeds are rare and in limited supply.
Type: Annual or perennial, frost tender
Height: 30-48", 76-122cm
Location: Sun or part sun
Hardiness zones: 10-11, elsewhere dig and store tubers for the winter
Seeds per packet: 3 Large seeds
Scratch each seed with sand-paper, or on a rough stone or brick, then soak in a warm location for 12-24 hours. Plant seeds just below the surface of the soil, and place the container in a sunny window. A heat mat can speed germination, but is not essential as long as they are in a warm area. Germination is 1-3 weeks. Be sure to keep the soil moist during the germination period.
