Korean fir is a very popular ornamental plant in gardens in cool climates, grown for its foliage but also for the abundant cone production even on young trees only 1–2 m tall.

It is a small to medium-sized evergreen coniferous tree growing to 10–18 m tall with a trunk diameter of up to 0.7 m, smaller and sometimes shrubby at tree line. The bark is smooth with resin blisters and grey-brown in colour. The leaves are needle-like, flattened, 1–2 cm long. The cones are 4–7 cm long and 1.5–2 cm broad, dark purple-blue before maturity.

Korean fir is native to the higher mountains of South Korea, including Jeju-do island. It grows at altitudes of 1,000–1,900 m in temperate rain forest with high rainfall and cool, humid summers, and heavy winter snowfall.

Hardiness zones: 5-7

Seeds per pack: 10

Germination: Soak the seeds in water for 12 hours planting. The planting container should have holes in the bottom for excess water to drain. Sow the seeds just under the surface and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 4 weeks. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold-moist stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature (20-22 °C, 68-72 °F) for them to germinate. Germination is generally 30-60 days after the warming period.
