Tradescantia ohiensis, commonly known as bluejacket or Ohio spiderwort, is native to eastern and central North America. It is the most common and widely distributed species of Tradescantia in the United States, where it can be found from Maine in the northeast, west to Minnesota, and south to Texas and Florida. It also has a small distribution in Canada in southern Ontario.
Typical habitats for the plant include roadsides, along railroads, and in fields and thickets. Less typically it can occur in woods, and sometimes along streams.
Type: Hardy perennial
Hardiness zones: 3-10
Height: 30", 76cm
Location: Sun
Seeds per packet: 15
Sow just under the surface of the soil and water in. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 90 days. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification they are then brought back to room temperature 20-22°C (68-72°F) for them to germinate. Germination is irregular over a long period of time, generally 60-90 days, but some can take longer. Do not discard the planting tray, as patience is needed, and they are well worth the wait.
Ornamental use only. These seeds and or plants are poisonous.
