Description
Sambucus nigra, also known as Canadian Elderberry, American Elderberry, Black Elderberry, Common Elder, and European Elder, is native to North America, Europe, northwest Africa, and southwest Asia.
This plant produces strongly scented yellow-white flowers in June, followed by shiny black fruits in the late autumn. The raw fruits should not be eaten.

Note: In all varieties of elderberry, the seeds, stems, leaves and roots are considered toxic.
Germination: Start these seeds right away to preserve viability, no matter the time of year. These seeds require a cold stratification period before they will grow. Soak the seeds in hot tap water for 24 hours before sowing. Sow the seeds just under the surface of a sterile seed-start mix, and water in. Leave them at room temperature for 2 months, and keep lightly moist. Then cover them with plastic and place in a fridge for 4-5 months. This cold period could also be done in a cold garage if it is winter time. Be sure they stay moist. After the cold stratification period they are then brought back to room temperature for them to germinate. Germination is generally in 14-60 days after the warming period, sometimes up to 4 months.
